Briar is the wood of choice for most pipe smokers. It is light, durable and very easy to work with. It can be stained or dyed any color, and it's naturally resistant to heat and moisture.



Briar comes from the root burl of the tree heath (Erica arborea) which grows in Europe and Asia Minor. The burls are harvested by cutting off the tree near ground level, then splitting them horizontally to reveal a large amount of pith tissue (which is used for making golf balls). The burls are cut into blocks which have a variety of shapes: round billets, oval billets and square billets. These blocks are then dried for several months before being sawed into blanks for pipes. Briar pipes made from European burls generally have better grain structure than those made from African burls because they have been dried longer before being sawed into blanks.
